Hawthorn's season slipped further into oblivion as premier Port Adelaide sent teams in the top eight an ominous warning with a 117-point demolition at AAMI Stadium last night.
A resurgent Power, which has now won its past three games, stretched its victory streak to six against the struggling Hawks with the highest score in its history – and most dominant display for the year.
Before this round, the Power was the lowest-scoring team in the competition, but with scores of 104 (St Kilda), 118 (Bulldogs) and 188 against the Hawks, its momentum is building fast.
The Power kicked the first 16 goals of the second half – a VFL/AFL record.
Port forward Warren Tredrea was at his brilliant best, kicking seven goals to lead the Power to an inspired win.
Peter Burgoyne, Josh Francou and Domenic Cassisi controlled play through the midfield to set up the Power's relentless attack.
Francou finished with 30 touches, while Kane Cornes (28) and Cassisi (27) also kicked two goals each.
If the loss was not nasty enough, there was more bad news for Hawthorn, with top midfielder Chance Bateman suffering a knee injury.
The Hawks will no doubt relish the break next week after slumping to their fourth straight loss.
Full-back Jonathan Hay was a late withdrawal, replaced in the side by Jarryd Roughead, leaving a major dent in the Hawks' defence against Port's potent, tall attack.
With three ruckmen in the team, Port had plenty of height to rotate through the forward line, with captain Matthew Primus and Brendon Lade giving the Hawks' backmen concerns.
But the biggest problem for the Hawks was Tredrea, who, after a quiet opening term, outclassed Trent Croad.
Byron Pickett was also among the Power's multiple goalscorers, kicking four goals.
Dean Brogan, after earning a recall to the senior team, and Lade did the bulk of the ruck work against Peter Everitt, who for once lowered his colours.
After acquitting themselves well in most of the first half, there were few positives for the Hawks.
Mark Williams brought up his 50th goal for the season in the second quarter, but his impact was restricted with limited supply and little support.
Williams had a run of eight consecutive games from Rounds 4 to 11 when he kicked four goals or more, but his goals appear to have dried up.
Sam Mitchell and former captain Shane Crawford were the Hawks' top possession winners, but, again, they had little impact.
With experienced forward John Barker (suspended), Campbell Brown (shoulder) and Nick Ries (wrist) replaced by debutant Tim Boyle and first-year players Jordan Lewis and Josh Thurgood, the Hawks' line-up was raw.
The Hawks fielded seven first-year players, including Roughead, Lance Franklin, Harry Miller and Simon Taylor.
Clarkson's young chicks would have left as a shattered and demoralised group last night.
It was an even opening to the match, with the Hawks and Power each kicking three goals up until the 23-minute mark.
But a successful snap from Lade sparked a flurry of four unanswered goals, two from Tredrea, in the space of five minutes for Port to take a 26-point lead at the first change.
The Hawks responded early in the second term, with Williams, Luke Brennan and Crawford kicking consecutive goals in the first four minutes of the quarter.
When 2004 draftee Franklin kicked another six minutes later, the Hawks had reduced the margin to six points.
But that's where Hawthorn's resistance came to an end. Tredrea and Pickett each added two goals to give the Power a four-goal lead at the main break.
Port piled on nine goals in the third term, its best quarter for the season, while Hawthorn failed to score a major.
The Power kicked an amazing 17 goals to two in the second half.
