He captained his TAC Cup side to the Grand Final in 2001, and was seen as one of the top picks in arguably the best draft in recent history. A natural left footer, Elstone failed to play a game for Hawthorn in two seasons, battling an ankle then hip injury and tough competition for senior spots.
Although he was seen as the most senior ready of the 2001 draftees, Elstone's lack of pace and right side meant he never really looked like making it at AFL level. He spent a lot of 2003 languishing in the Box Hill reserves, and a serious hip injury meant he was delisted at season's end, after which he joined the Port Adelaide Magpies in the SANFL. |
