I suppose I could be really lazy and just type www.footydraft.com and leave it at that, but I thought I'd provide a bit of background as to how the draft might unfold.

The Top 10

The first 3 selections pick themselves, and any side not taking one of Deledio, Tambling or Griffen would be taking a silly risk.

The Tigers will most likely take Roughead at 4, then things become interesting. Lance Franklin at 5 would be the logical pick, but he has eased in the betting recently and don't be surprised if Hawthorn surprise and take John Meesen or Tom Williams at 5. Personally I think this would be a mistake. Franklin has queries over him, but he has talent and could hold down CHF for a decade. Of course, we could get lucky and Griffen or Roughead may slip through to 5.

Strong rumours about Tom Williams going to the Dogs at 6 have been around for a while now. It's a massive gamble, but just the type of thing Clayton has done in the past (Tim Walsh and Farren Ray at 4). The only thing that might change it is if Franklin slips through to 6.

Hawthorn will probably take Meesen at 7, and if he is already taken possibly Angus Monfries. Adelaide at pick 8 would seem very likely to look at either Monfries or Cameron Wood.

Carlton at pick 9 is very hard to pick. You'd think they would look at a ruckman, so Wood and Deluca should be in the mix, but they may go for a key position instead.

Collingwood have been linked to Matthew Bate, but are also rumoured to be looking at a SA midfielder, which could be Monfries, Meyer, Eckerman or even Jordan Russell.

As you can see - numerous possibilities just with the top 10 selections! From then on it evens out and becomes a chook raffle. Expect to see players slide down the order and others pop up early on, depending on club needs.

The other thing that is impossible to predict is which overage players will be taken. There will be a few AFL discards along with some players from the State leagues - especially late in the draft.

Adelaide (picks 8,24,28,40,56) - Will probably look for some replacements for their ageing midfield, along with a ruckman.

Brisbane Lions (18,27,45,50,64) - Tend to pick the best available, but will probably look for a couple of tall forwards.

Carlton (9,25,41*,73,77,78) - Already taken Luke Blackwell under the father-son rule. Will probably try and get some key position and ruckman. Don't be surprised if Pagan pulls a major surprise or two with late draft picks.

Collingwood (10,23,39*,55,66) - Already getting Travis Cloke, so will surely use most of their other selections on midfielders. Likely to pass on their final selection for the pre-season draft.

Essendon (14,30,46,60,70) - Have a slow midfield but addressed this last draft. More likely to look for key defenders. Sheedy is bound to go for one recycled player.

Fremantle (59,67,69,75) - Will be bored witless the first hour of the draft after trading away three selections for Josh Carr. Connolly appears to be mortgaging the future for the next couple of years, so they may look to overage talent from the WAFL.

Geelong (16,32,48*,62) - Will take the best available. Apparently looking at VFL defender Matt Egan as insurance if Harley or Scarlett go down.

Hawthorn (2,5,7,21,26,53) - A happy day coming up for Hawk fans. A couple of midfielders with pace, a ruckman and a couple of key position players will do nicely.

Kangaroos (42*,58,68,74) - Mortgaged their future by trading early picks for Nathan Thompson. Like Freo, may look for overage players, but have a gun in JW Smith at 42.

Melbourne (13,15,43) - Likely to pick the best available.

Port Adelaide (11,19,34,35,51) - Some good early picks despite a premiership, will probably take the best available.

Richmond (1,4,12,16,20,36,52,65,72) - Not even the Tigers could stuff up with these picks, could they? Will take at least one recycled player and keep a pick for the pre-season draft.

St Kilda (17,33,49,63,71,76) - Another club that tends to go for the best available. Surely has to pick up at least one ruckman.

Sydney (31,47,61) - Need a couple of key position players. Have been rumoured to be looking at Werribee forward James Podisiadley for pick 61.

West Coast (29,37,44*,57) - Handy pick-up with Mitchell Morton at 44, seem happy with their list so will look to add to their depth.

Western Bulldogs (3,6,22,38,54) - Desperately need key position players and inside midfielders, and possibly a forward pocket.

I'll finish by saying the same thing I said a few weeks back. The draft is a lottery. At the end of the day you can have more tickets or more expensive tickets, but it's no guarantee you'll win. Enjoy the day and let's look forward to Hawthorn getting some talented youngsters on our list.
